Mrs. Merrell's first graders at Willowville Elementary studied the artist Mondrian as well as the primary colors this week by painting in his style. They set up their papers carefully creating vertical and horizontal lines with paper strips. They discovered that when the lines criss-crossed they made shapes such as squares and rectangles. The final step was to use the primary colors to fill in the shapes. When the first graders were finished they had masterpieces similar to Piet Mondrian. They also created abstract paintings that focused on line, shape and color (3 of the elements of art that we studied this school year.)

For our color rotation, students at all levels have been enjoying this video by OK GO! I love the creative way they show colormixing and it helps the students remember how to create secondary colors from the primary colors. Warning, it's very catchy. Projects on display at Willowville Elementary from our Shape Rotation. The colorful projects brightened up the hallways!
As a member of The Ohio Art Education Association (OAEA) I attended this year's conference held in Cincinnati. It was a worthwhile day of Professional Development. I attended workshops on hot topics like TAB (Teaching for Artist Behavior), encouraging students to use critical thinking /21st Century Learning, and Multiculturalism as well as getting great lesson ideas for elementary art. The networking was great and I came home inspired with new ideas I want to incorporate into my classroom! Mrs. Stidham's 1st graders at Willowville Elementary created realistic trees with whimsical inspiration from artist Wassily Kandinsky. They painted their trees with tempra paint and tried out a new material-oil pastels to create their concentric circles (circles inside of circles). A great project to review line and shape.
Mrs. Steven's 5th graders at Willowville Elementary hard at work creating their radial symmetry origami. This assignment was a perfect blend of math and art concepts. Students did an excellent job with this challenging project and didn't want to stop when class was over.
Mrs. Smith's 3rd graders at Willowville Elementary enjoyed creating paper collages in the style of artist Henri Matisse. They designed abstract pictures focusing on color and shape.
Art currently display at Willowville Elementary. Every project features the element of art: Line. Nice work Willowville Artists! We have received so many wonderful comments about the art brightening up the hallways.
With all the awesome projects completed it was hard to choose. Congratulations to our Willowville Artists of the Month for September: 1st Grade: Makenna H., 2nd Grade: Aiden H., 3rd Grade: Braden W., 4th Grade Lauren S., and 5th Grade Olivia B.
Mrs. Stevens 5th Grade class at Willowville Elementary worked hard today on their line pattern project using scratch art paper. The students loved working with this medium and found it to be a very relaxing process. I loved how hard they worked to get these finished before the end of class. Way to go 5th grade!
